Speculation And Unnamed Reliable Source Says . . .

The website Confirm Them is reporting that a 'reliable' source has advised that C.J. William Rehnquist will step down in the next four weeks. He also reports that the money bet, according to the Fedster, for a replacement is 10th Circuit Judge Michael W. McConnell.

He is University of Chicago guy (good), and he clerked for Justice Brennan. But the Brennan clerkship should concern you if you are seeking a conservative justice. These groups were opposed to him when he was nominated for the 10th Circuit:

National Coucil of Jewish Women
Alliance for Justice
American Association of University Women
Americans United for Separation of Church and State
Center for Reproductive Law and Policy
Feminist Majority
Human Rights Campaign
NARAL
National Abortion Federation
National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association
National Partnership for Women and Families
NOW and NOW Legal Defense Fund
People for the American Way
Planned Parenthood

He would presumably overturn Roe, but so would Rehnquist. So that won't change the make up of the Court. He would allow a little more "church-state" intermingling according to his liberal oppoenents. I do not know anything else about him really, but with a list of opponents like that, he can't be all bad.

True. But at least he doesn't have the preacher puff comb back.

Oh, crap! I've got a cert petition due in a the end of the month and the Chief Justice is our go-to guy in the Fourth Circuit! I don't want this thing landing in Souter's lap while the Senate talks themselves to death.
I hope they're wrong.
